Rookie Lifeguard Sessions

Our entry-level programme for younger swimmers learning pool rescue skills, water safety awareness and basic lifesaving. Delivered in a fun, structured environment that builds confidence and skill together.

Structured preparation for candidates heading towards formal pool lifeguard qualification. Builds the physical fitness, technique and confidence needed to succeed in NPLQ training and leisure employment.

When do courses start?

How long do courses run?

Course length varies by programme. Rookie Lifeguard and Academy Lifeguard sessions are available as term-time blocks (typically 6–10 weeks, one session per week) or as holiday intensive blocks (3–5 consecutive days). Pool Lifeguard Preparation and Beach Lifesaving courses are delivered as structured blocks, details of which will be published with individual course listings. Exact durations and timetables will be confirmed when bookings open.

What's the cost?

Pricing will be published with full course listings. Yorkshire Lifeguard Academy is committed to making lifeguard training as accessible as possible to young people across the Yorkshire coast. We're working to keep costs fair and reasonable, and we'll be providing clear pricing for each programme — including any equipment or registration costs — before bookings open. If cost is a potential barrier for your family, please get in touch and we'll do our best to help.

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes — all Yorkshire Lifeguard Academy courses require advance booking. Places on each course are limited to maintain a quality training environment and ensure appropriate instructor-to-student ratios. Registered interest holders will receive early booking access before courses open to the general public, so registering now is the best way to secure your place. Walk-in participation is not available.

Can schools or clubs book group sessions?

Yes. Yorkshire Lifeguard Academy welcomes enquiries from schools, swimming clubs, youth organisations and community groups who'd like to bring a group of young people into our training programmes. Group bookings may be available for both scheduled courses and bespoke sessions. Please get in touch directly to discuss your requirements and we'll work with you to find the right arrangement.

What's the minimum age for each programme?

Age ranges are as follows: Rookie Lifeguard is suitable for swimmers aged 8–12; Academy Lifeguard is designed for ages 13–17; Pool Lifeguard Preparation and Beach Lifesaving are open to participants aged 16 and over. All programmes have minimum swimming ability requirements — participants should be confident, competent swimmers before attending. Exact entry standards will be listed with each course.
