Academy Lifeguard Programme
Developing the next generation
of Yorkshire lifeguards.
For swimmers aged 13–17 ready to develop advanced rescue skills, first aid, teamwork, leadership and full lifeguard readiness.
Who It's For
Built for swimmers
who want more.
The Academy Lifeguard programme is designed for swimmers aged 13–17 who have completed the Rookie Lifeguard pathway — or who already have the confidence and ability to begin advanced lifesaving training.
This isn't a swimming club. This is a structured development programme that mirrors real lifeguard training — building the physical capability, mental sharpness and practical knowledge needed to protect lives in both pool and coastal environments.
Members join a community of young people on the Yorkshire coast who are serious about water safety, serious about their own development, and serious about making a difference.
Ready for what comes next.
The Academy Lifeguard programme develops complete lifesavers — not just swimmers. What They'll Learn
Seven skills that define
a lifeguard.
Every session builds towards a complete lifeguard — combining technical rescue, medical knowledge, physical conditioning and the mindset that sets a lifesaver apart from every other person on the beach.
Advanced Rescue Techniques
Pool and open-water entries, approaches, towbacks and extraction drills. Developing instinctive rescue responses in high-pressure scenarios across pool and coastal environments.
CPR & First Aid
Hands-on CPR, AED operation, casualty management and scene assessment. Scenario-based training ensures members can act decisively, calmly and correctly in real emergencies.
Water Safety Leadership
Understanding risk, communicating danger, managing bystanders and taking authority in water safety situations. Leaders who keep others safer — in and out of the water.
Teamwork & Communication
Lifesaving never happens alone. Members develop clear verbal communication, coordinated rescue operations and the ability to work under pressure as part of an effective team.
Pool & Coastal Skills
Training across both pool and coastal environments on the Yorkshire coast. Understanding currents, tides, surf conditions and the specific hazards of the North Sea that make this training uniquely relevant.
Fitness & Conditioning
Timed swims, tow drills, endurance circuits and recovery training. The physical capability to reach a casualty quickly, perform a rescue and remain effective under sustained effort.
Lifeguard Mindset & Responsibility
Vigilance, discipline, ethical responsibility, and awareness of duty. Understanding that being a lifeguard is a privilege — and that readiness, not reaction, is what saves lives.

More Than Swimming
We develop character,
not just swimmers.
Any programme can make someone a faster swimmer. The Academy Lifeguard programme makes someone a better person — more responsible, more aware, more capable of leading when it matters most.
Responsibility
Members understand that their presence, their attention and their skills may be the difference between life and death. That weight shapes behaviour — inside and outside the water.
Vigilance
Trained observation skills. The ability to spot danger before it becomes an emergency. A habit of awareness that Academy graduates carry with them for life.
Leadership Under Pressure
Real leadership isn't a title — it's staying calm when others panic, making decisions with incomplete information, and taking action when others freeze.
Community & Purpose
Academy members belong to something bigger than themselves. A tradition of Yorkshire coastal lifesaving. A network of people committed to keeping communities safe.
The water doesn't care how fast you swim. It cares whether you prepared for this moment — and whether you're ready to act.

We train where the sea is real, the conditions are unpredictable, and the stakes are genuine. Whitby, Scarborough and Bridlington are not backdrops — they are the classroom.
Frequently Asked Questions
Questions about the programme.
Everything parents and young people commonly ask about the Academy Lifeguard programme. Can't find what you need? Get in touch.
Yes — Rookie Lifeguard is our recommended starting point, but it isn't always a requirement. We offer a free introductory assessment where we evaluate swimming ability, water confidence and suitability for the Academy Lifeguard programme. If the level is right, we can enrol directly. If not, we'll recommend the best way to prepare. Either way, we'll always find the right starting point for your swimmer.
Academy Lifeguard sessions typically run weekly for around 90 minutes per session. We operate across term-time and offer block holiday formats for those who cannot commit to weekly attendance. Some sessions take place in the pool, while others are coastal training days on the Yorkshire coast. Your coach will share a full schedule at the start of each block so you can plan ahead.
No — the Academy Lifeguard programme is a development and preparation pathway, not a formal qualification itself. It is designed to give young people the skills, fitness and knowledge to succeed when they move on to formal qualifications such as the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) or RLSS UK beach lifeguard awards. Think of it as the most thorough possible preparation for those next steps — so that when you arrive at a formal qualification course, you're already capable rather than starting from scratch.
Challenge is part of the programme — that's how growth happens. Our coaches are trained to work with young people across a range of abilities and to set appropriately stretching targets. If a member finds specific elements difficult, we adapt the approach, set interim goals, and ensure they are building confidence rather than feeling overwhelmed. Anyone who has been assessed as ready for the programme is capable of succeeding — sometimes it just takes a little more time and patience, and that's completely fine.
Both — and that's one of the things that makes the Academy Lifeguard programme genuinely different. The majority of sessions take place in controlled pool environments for skill development, technique and conditioning. However, we incorporate coastal training days across our Yorkshire coast locations throughout the year. Open-water sessions are carefully managed, weather and condition-dependent, and safety-briefed. Participants are never placed in conditions beyond their capability.
