Lifeguards in training on a Yorkshire coastline

The Academy Pathway

From swimming lessons
to lifesaving leadership.

A clear, structured route for every swimmer —
wherever they start.

Our Philosophy

Every great lifeguard
started in the water.

The Yorkshire Lifeguard Academy exists because talent is everywhere — but structured opportunity isn't. Our pathway changes that. Beginning with foundational swimming skills and progressing through nationally recognised lifesaving qualifications, every stage has been designed to build not just ability, but confidence, character, and a genuine commitment to the safety of others.

Rooted in the proud maritime heritage of Whitby, Scarborough and Bridlington, we believe that the next generation of Britain's lifeguards are already out there — they just need a pathway worth following.

The Academy Pathway

Each stage is designed to build on the last — skills, confidence and qualifications that stack towards a genuine lifesaving career.

🏊 Stage 1

Learn to Swim

All ages · Any ability · Pool based

  • Water confidence, buoyancy and basic body position from the first session
  • Structured progression through swimming strokes — front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke
  • Breathing technique and turning skills that will underpin lifesaving later
  • Fun, safe and encouraging group sessions led by experienced Academy coaches

Next stage: Swimmers who can complete 25m unaided and show water confidence are ready to begin the Rookie Lifeguard programme.

🛟 Stage 2

Rookie Lifeguard

Age 8–12 · Confident swimmers · Pool based

  • Introduction to lifesaving principles — spot, signal, call, reach, throw and don't go
  • Treading water, survival floating and timed distance swimming to build stamina
  • Using throwlines, reaching poles and rescue aids under guided supervision
  • First aid awareness — recognising emergencies and understanding when to call for help

Next stage: Rookies aged 13+ who meet the swim standard progress to the Academy Lifeguard programme and begin formal RLSS qualification work.

Stage 3

Academy Lifeguard

Age 13–17 · RLSS Rookie Award holder · Pool & open water

  • RLSS National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers & Coaches — the building block of professional qualifications
  • In-water rescues: contact, non-contact, tow and carry techniques in pool and open-water environments
  • Casualty assessment, CPR with AED use and managing spinal injuries
  • Open-water induction sessions at Scarborough and Whitby with experienced beach lifeguard mentors

Next stage: At 16, Academy members can split their pathway — pursue the Pool Lifeguard qualification, the Beach Lifesaving strand, or both simultaneously.

Pool Lifeguard Preparation

Age 16+ · Academy Lifeguard graduate · RLSS NPLQ pathway

  • Full RLSS National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) preparation — the industry-standard pool credential
  • Timed swim assessments (100m in under 3:30), brick retrieval and underwater recovery skills
  • Poolside supervision theory — surveillance patterns, incident reporting and legal responsibilities
  • Mock exam scenarios and supported exam entry through our approved RLSS training centre

Next stage: Qualified pool lifeguards can enter the workforce immediately or continue to Stage 5 Beach Lifesaving for dual qualification and greater career flexibility.

🌊 Stage 5

Beach Lifesaving Preparation

Age 16+ · Academy Lifeguard graduate · SLSA/RLSS Beach pathway

  • Open-water swimming, surf awareness and rip current recognition across North Yorkshire's working coastline
  • Rescue board, rescue tube and signal flag protocols aligned with RNLI and SLSC operational standards
  • Tidal observation, weather interpretation and the role of beach lifeguards within the wider emergency services
  • Physical conditioning programme — running, swimming and paddling fitness benchmarks for service deployment

Next stage: Beach-ready graduates are referred directly to partnering RNLI stations, Surf Life Saving Clubs and local authority beach patrol services for seasonal employment or volunteering.

Graduating from the Academy pathway is not an endpoint — it is the beginning of a lifelong relationship with the water and the communities that depend on it. Our alumni go on to serve across the Yorkshire coast and beyond.

Why It Matters

A pathway built for
Yorkshire's coastline — and beyond.

Structured development doesn't just produce better lifeguards. It produces safer beaches, more confident communities, and young people with the skills and character to lead.

Pool sessions, tidal river training at Whitby, surf conditions at Scarborough and the wide sandy beach at Bridlington — we train where it matters.

💛
People First
Lifelong character development

The Academy pathway is as much about leadership, empathy and responsibility as it is about swimming speed. We develop the whole person, not just the qualification.

"

"The gap between a child who can swim and a child who can save a life is narrower than you think — it just requires the right pathway, the right people and the right environment."
