Adults — surf lifesaving and coastal safety.

The adult pathway gives people the opportunity to learn lifesaving skills, support coastal safety, volunteer, train, coach, stay active, compete if they wish, and contribute to the community. East Riding SLSC welcomes adults of all ages and backgrounds — from first-timers to experienced lifesavers.

About the Adult Pathway

Lifesaving, coaching, volunteering and coastal community.

East Riding Surf Life Saving Club provides a flexible, welcoming adult pathway with multiple routes. Adults can develop lifesaving and beach safety skills, volunteer, support community activity, train towards coaching or leadership roles, compete in surf lifesaving sport if they wish, or simply stay active and build friendships with people who care about coastal safety.

Whether you want to get in the water, support from the beach, help with events, train as a coach, volunteer behind the scenes or simply be part of the club community, there can be a place for adults in East Riding SLSC.

The adult pathway is delivered through four main routes:

Lifesaving & Beach Safety

Surf lifesaver awards, patrol awareness, beach and water safety, casualty care, rescue skills and emergency response awareness. Any patrol-style or rescue role depends on training, competence, qualifications and club arrangements.

First Aid & Safety Training

First aid awareness, emergency response awareness, beach safety awareness and event-support skills can form part of adult club development. Formal first aid qualifications sit with Bluewatch Training and may be suitable for adults who coach, lead sessions, support events or want recognised workplace or community first aid training. Progression towards coaching, trainer or assessor routes depends on experience, suitability and awarding-body requirements.

Coaching & Leadership

SLSGB coaching awards, training design and delivery, athlete development, official and referee training, club leadership. Coaching and leadership roles depend on SLSGB requirements, experience and suitability.

Volunteering & Community

Beach safety education, helping with club sessions, SLSGB event support, club development, mentoring younger members and contributing to a positive coastal community — in and out of the water.

There is no upper age limit. Adults of all ages — including the Masters category (30+) — are welcome to train, compete, volunteer and contribute to the club.

You do not need to be a lifeguard already

All levels and backgrounds welcome.

Adults can get involved at different levels. Some may want to train seriously, compete or work towards qualifications. Others may want to volunteer, help with club activity, support events, build confidence, stay active or contribute to coastal safety in a non-operational role.

A strong adult pathway also helps the club build the volunteer, coaching, safeguarding, first aid, event support and community leadership capacity needed to support safe, sustainable surf lifesaving activity. This adult capacity is what allows children's and youth activity to be safe, sustainable and well supported over time. Parents of Nippers, members of the public, existing lifeguards, coaches and complete beginners can all find a role.

Safe, supervised and role-appropriate

Adults take on roles that match their training and readiness.

Adult surf lifesaving activity is developed progressively. Beach, ocean, pool, patrol-style and event-support activity will depend on ability, experience, training, qualifications, supervision, risk assessment, weather, sea conditions and club arrangements.

Adults are only asked to take on roles that are suitable for their training, competence and readiness. Joining the adult pathway does not automatically authorise someone to act as a lifeguard, provide event safety cover, deliver first aid, coach sessions or take on patrol or rescue roles. Those roles depend on suitable training, qualifications, competence, supervision, insurance, safeguarding, club procedures and partner or event arrangements.

Adults supporting children or young people should follow club safeguarding arrangements, role expectations and any required checks or training before doing so.

SLSGB Masters Sport

Adults compete too — if they want to.

Adult members can compete in SLSGB Open and Masters (30+) surf lifesaving sport — beach, ocean and pool events at regional, national and international level. Competition is one route within the adult pathway, not the defining offer.

Lifesaving sport is not only about competition; it also helps adults maintain fitness, teamwork, water confidence and practical lifesaving skills.

Where might I fit?

You might join to train, volunteer, coach — or simply belong.

Adults usually join East Riding SLSC as part of the club community, then find the right route through training, volunteering, sport, coaching, first aid, event support or non-operational roles. You do not need to be a lifeguard, a swimmer, or a competitor to get involved.

You might join the adult pathway to:

Learn beach safety and surf lifesaving skills
Support Nippers or youth sessions
Volunteer behind the scenes
Train towards coaching or leadership
Help with events or club activities
Build water confidence and fitness
Compete in Open or Masters sport
Develop first aid or coaching skills
Support community coastal safety
Become part of a positive local club

We can help identify a suitable starting point based on your experience, confidence, interests and availability.

Not every adult role is water-based

Strong clubs need people on the beach and behind the scenes as well as in the water. Adults can contribute through:

  • Administration and club organisation
  • Safeguarding support and welfare
  • Event organisation and equipment care
  • Fundraising and communications
  • Mentoring younger members
  • Parent support and family involvement
  • Officiating and competition support
  • Community engagement and water safety education

The adult pathway is not only about qualifications. It is about building a capable, friendly and safe club community with adults who can support children, young people, sport, volunteering and coastal safety over time.
