The SLSGB Nipper Lifesaver Pathway introduces children aged 7–13 to surf lifesaving through fun, safe and age-appropriate activities. Nippers build beach safety awareness, water confidence, teamwork, fitness and respect for the sea as the first step into East Riding Surf Life Saving Club. Children are introduced to lifesaving principles progressively — Nippers does not qualify children to act as lifeguards or attempt rescues independently.

About the Nipper Pathway

The first step into surf lifesaving.

The Nipper Lifesaver Pathway is the SLSGB programme for children aged 7–13. It introduces young people to beach safety, surf awareness, water confidence, teamwork and the foundations of lifesaving in a fun, supervised and age-appropriate club environment on the Yorkshire coast.

The pathway is structured in three progressive stages, with each stage building on the last. Children progress through Bronze, Silver and Gold (Lifesaver Apprentice) awards, developing skills and confidence at every step.

The awards provide structure, but Nippers is also about club identity, friendship, teamwork, confidence, fitness and learning to respect the sea. This can be the starting point for a lifesaving journey that may lead through the Graduate Lifeguard Programme, surf lifesaving sport and, in time, formal lifeguard qualifications — but that is not the primary aim for most children.

Who Nippers is for

For children aged 7–13 who enjoy the beach and being active.

Nippers is for children aged 7–13 who enjoy being active, learning new skills, working as part of a team and building confidence around the beach and water. Children should have suitable water confidence for the activity offered, and we will discuss suitability with parents where needed.

Safety comes first

Safe, supervised and age-appropriate.

Nipper activity is introduced progressively and responsibly. Beach, ocean, pool and dry-side activities will depend on age, ability, supervision, safeguarding arrangements, weather, sea state, risk assessment and individual readiness.

Not every session will involve entering the sea. Safety will always come before programme content. Activity is structured, supervised and adapted to the group and conditions — sea entry is never guaranteed and will only take place where it is appropriate, risk-assessed and safely supervised.

Nippers teaches beach safety, self-protection, teamwork, rescue awareness and age-appropriate lifesaving skills. It does not qualify children to act as lifeguards, supervise others near water or attempt rescues independently.

The Nipper Lifesaver Pathway

Three progressive stages

Each stage builds on the last — developing beach safety, surf awareness and lifesaving confidence in a structured, age-appropriate way. Skills are introduced progressively and only where suitable for the child, group, venue, conditions and supervision arrangements.

Stage 1

Bronze Nipper Lifesaver

The first stage of the Nipper pathway — introducing children to the beach environment, basic water safety, water confidence and teamwork.

Stage 2

Silver Nipper Lifesaver

The second stage develops surf awareness and rescue awareness further, building on Bronze skills and applying swimming ability in supervised lifesaving and surf safety activities.

Stage 3

Lifesaver Apprentice (Gold)

The most developed Nipper stage — preparing young people to move into the Graduate Lifeguard Programme from age 13.

Lifesaving Sport

Nippers can also compete.

From the earliest stages of the pathway, children can take part in Nipper surf lifesaving sport — beach, ocean and pool-based events that develop fitness, rescue skills and teamwork. Competition is introduced progressively and only where suitable. Children do not need to be competitive athletes to benefit from Nippers. Children who enjoy competition may have opportunities to progress into regional and national lifesaving sport events over time.

What parents should know

Nippers is a club pathway, not a lifeguard course.

Nippers is a surf lifesaving club pathway for children aged 7–13. It is not a lifeguard qualification and does not authorise children to act as lifeguards or attempt rescues independently.

Children learn beach safety, surf awareness, self-protection, teamwork, fitness, respect for the sea and age-appropriate lifesaving principles. Activity may be beach-based, pool-based, dry-side or water-based depending on age, ability, weather, sea conditions, supervision and risk assessment.

Parents should expect activity to vary depending on weather, sea state, water quality, supervision, venue access, age group and individual readiness. Sea entry is never guaranteed — safe dry-side, beach-based, pool-based or fitness-based activity may be the right format on some days.

Any Nipper activity is delivered with appropriate safeguarding, supervision, risk assessment, insurance, venue or beach permissions, and SLSGB-aligned programme expectations.

Nippers may be suitable if your child:
