Rookie Lifeguard Programme
The first step
into lifesaving.
For swimmers aged 8–12 who are ready to learn rescue skills, water safety and the mindset of a lifeguard.
Who it's for
Swimmers ready
for something more.
Rookie Lifeguard is designed for young swimmers aged approximately 8 to 12 who have completed a standard swimming lesson programme and are ready to go further. This isn't about swimming faster — it's about learning to look out for others, to act calmly under pressure, and to understand the water around them.
Sessions are structured, progressive and delivered by qualified instructors who understand how to make training both challenging and enjoyable for this age group. Rookies grow in confidence, capability and character — building a genuine foundation in water safety and lifesaving.
Age 8–12
Building water confidence, rescue awareness and lifeguard mindset from day one.
Skills & Knowledge
What Rookies will learn.
Every Rookie Lifeguard session builds practical skills that carry real weight — not just in the pool, but for life. Here's what your child will develop across the programme.
Rescue Skills
Learning to recognise when someone is in difficulty and how to act — including reach, throw and assisted rescues appropriate for their age and size.
Water Safety Knowledge
Understanding hazards in pools, open water and coastal environments — flags, currents, depths, rip tides and how to stay safe in different conditions.
Casualty Support
First contact with basic first aid concepts: how to call for help, keep calm, reassure a casualty, and stay safe until an adult or professional arrives.
Team Challenges
Working as a unit — communication, trust and shared responsibility through fun, structured challenges that build the real teamwork that lifesaving requires.
Water Confidence
Developing composure and capability in the water — treading water, survival techniques, swimming in clothing, and growing comfortable in unexpected situations.
Lifeguard Awareness
Understanding what a lifeguard actually does — the scanning, the decisions, the duty of care — and what it means to take responsibility for others in the water.

Session Format
Sessions run for approximately 60–75 minutes and combine pool-based practical training with short land-based activities covering water safety theory, first aid awareness and lifeguard knowledge. Groups are kept small to ensure every Rookie gets hands-on time and personal attention from instructors.
Locations
- Whitby — pool sessions with local coastal context
- Scarborough — pool training and beach awareness sessions
- Bridlington — harbour-town focused water safety training
Ability Requirements
Rookies should be confident, independent swimmers. As a guideline, we expect participants to be able to swim 25 metres unaided without stopping, tread water for at least 30 seconds, and be comfortable putting their face in the water. Exact requirements are discussed at registration — if you're unsure, get in touch and we'll advise.
What to Bring
- Swimwear (a one-piece is recommended for training activities)
- Towel and warm change of clothes
- Goggles (optional — some activities are done without)
- Water bottle — sessions are physically active
- Any relevant medical information for instructors
Course Length
The Rookie Lifeguard programme is delivered across a structured block of sessions — typically six to eight weeks. Blocks run across school terms. Register interest to be notified of upcoming term dates and availability at your local venue.
For Parents & Guardians
What you need to know.
Everything is designed with your child's safety, enjoyment and development at the forefront.
Sessions maintain low instructor-to-child ratios so every Rookie gets proper attention and no one gets lost in the crowd.
All Yorkshire Lifeguard Academy instructors are DBS-checked, first aid certified and hold appropriate water safety qualifications.
A clear safeguarding policy is in place for all sessions. Parents receive a full information pack prior to their child's first session.
We keep parents informed throughout. Any concerns, adaptations or progress updates are communicated openly by instructors.
We only accept children who meet minimum swim ability — this is for their safety and the group's progress. We'll advise honestly if the timing isn't quite right.
The Pathway Forward
Rookie is just the beginning.
Completing Rookie Lifeguard is the first step on a structured pathway that can take young people all the way to qualified lifeguard status and beyond. The skills learned here become the foundation for everything that follows.

A message to parents
Your child's safety is
our first priority.
We know that putting your child into a new, active water environment takes trust. Yorkshire Lifeguard Academy takes that responsibility seriously — in every session, at every venue, with every group.
Qualified & Vetted Instructors
Every instructor holds relevant water safety and lifesaving qualifications, is DBS-checked and completes ongoing safeguarding training. Your child is in experienced hands.
Structured, Age-Appropriate Sessions
Sessions are specifically designed for the 8–12 age group — appropriate challenge levels, appropriate language, appropriate expectations. Nothing is rushed or pushed beyond readiness.
Constant In-Water Supervision
All pool sessions are delivered with qualified in-water supervision in addition to poolside instruction. Ratios are kept low specifically to maintain close oversight of every participant.
First Aid Ready at All Times
At least one first aid certified instructor is present at every session. Emergency action plans are in place for every venue and are reviewed regularly with facility management.
Open Communication
We actively encourage parents to contact us before, during or after the programme. If your child is struggling or flourishing, we'll tell you. We're here to support the whole family journey.
Progress at Every Child's Pace
Rookie Lifeguard is about building confidence — not racing to an outcome. If your child needs more time with a skill, they get it. There's no pressure, only encouragement and genuine care.
Common Questions
Frequently asked questions.
Can't find the answer you need? Get in touch directly — we're happy to help.
Your child should be a confident, independent swimmer before joining Rookie Lifeguard. As a guide, we expect them to be able to swim 25 metres unaided without stopping, to tread water for at least 30 seconds, and to be comfortable submerging their face in the water. They do not need to be a fast swimmer — Rookie Lifeguard is about skills, not speed. If you're not sure whether your child is ready, contact us and we'll talk it through. We'd rather have that conversation early than have a child in a session that isn't right for them yet.
We recommend a close-fitting one-piece swimsuit for pool training — some activities involve movement that makes looser swimwear impractical. Goggles are welcome but not always required, as some exercises are done without them to build comfort. Your child will also need a towel and warm, dry clothes to change into after the session. Bring a water bottle too — sessions are physically active and staying hydrated matters.
Yes. Safety is the foundation of everything we do. All sessions are delivered by qualified, DBS-checked instructors with relevant water safety and first aid certifications. In-water supervision is provided at all times during pool work, and poolside instructor ratios are kept deliberately low. Each venue has a written emergency action plan that our team follows and reviews regularly. We do not take risks with children's welfare — if conditions or circumstances are not right, we adapt or pause the session. You will always receive full pre-session information including venue emergency contact details.
A typical Rookie Lifeguard session runs for 60 to 75 minutes. Sessions usually begin with a brief land-based warm-up and topic introduction, then move into pool-based practical training. Activities are progressive — each session builds on the last — and alternate between individual skills practice and team challenges. Instructors explain the 'why' behind every skill, not just the technique, so children genuinely understand what they're learning and why it matters. Sessions are designed to feel exciting and purposeful, not like a school lesson.
We completely understand that children have off days, that some activities feel harder than others, and that building confidence takes time. If your child is struggling with something, instructors will adapt the approach, modify the task, or offer extra support — no child is left behind or made to feel they've failed. If your child is unwell or needs to miss a session, just let us know in advance. We'll keep you informed about how to catch up on key content, and we'll make sure they feel welcomed back when they return.
Rookie Lifeguard is the entry point to the Yorkshire Lifeguard Academy pathway. After completing the programme, capable and committed young swimmers can progress to Academy Lifeguard — our programme for ages 13 to 17 — where training deepens significantly in rescue skills, first aid, leadership and lifeguard readiness. From there, the pathway continues into Pool Lifeguard Preparation, Beach Lifesaving Preparation, and formal qualifications including the NPLQ. We'll always talk to you and your child about readiness for the next step and make sure the timing is right.
