What the NPLQ covers

A comprehensive programme covering every aspect of pool lifeguard duty — surveillance, rescue, first aid and emergency management.

Pool Surveillance

Systematic surveillance techniques, scanning patterns, distress recognition and the vigilance required to identify a bather in difficulty before an emergency develops.

Emergency Action Plans

How to activate and execute a pool emergency action plan — clearance procedures, team coordination, communication with emergency services and post-incident management.

Pool Rescue Techniques

Active and passive victim rescue at the surface and submerged, rescue tube technique, entry and exit techniques, and multi-lifeguard rescue procedures.

First Aid & CPR

Full first aid and CPR training to RLSS UK standards, including AED use, recovery position, management of near-drowning casualties and basic life support.

Spinal Injury Management

Recognition and management of suspected spinal injury in a pool environment — in-water stabilisation and safe extraction procedures.

Professional Responsibility

The legal and professional responsibilities of a pool lifeguard — duty of care, reporting, record keeping, pool rules enforcement and professional conduct.

Entry requirements

Are you ready for the NPLQ?

The NPLQ has swimming and fitness entry requirements set by RLSS UK. Candidates must be 16 years old or above at the time of final assessment and must be able to meet the required swimming, deep-water and self-rescue standards before starting the course.

NPLQ courses usually require a minimum of 36 hours of training, 100% attendance and a final assessment. Course format may vary by venue, timetable and provider requirements.

You may be ready for NPLQ if you:

Are 16 or will be 16 by the time of final assessment
Can meet the published RLSS entry swimming requirements
Are confident and comfortable in deep water
Can swim to timed standards under pressure
Are ready for first aid, CPR, rescue skills and theory assessment
Can attend the full course with 100% attendance
Are mature enough for professional, safety-critical training and responsibility

Jump or dive into deep water
Swim 50 metres in under 60 seconds
Swim 100 metres continuously on front and back
Tread water for 30 seconds in deep water
Surface dive to the floor of the pool
Climb out unaided without ladder or steps (where pool design permits)
