Yorkshire Lifeguard Academy is the RLSS Accredited Club within Yorkshire Lifeguards. It provides a structured RLSS pathway for confident swimmers and future lifeguards, developing lifesaving skills, water safety knowledge, rescue confidence, first aid awareness, lifesaving sport and progression towards NPLQ, NVBLQ and Open Water Lifeguard. The Academy is designed to complement existing swimming lessons, clubs and venue programmes by offering the next step into lifesaving, water safety, rescue skills, sport and lifeguarding.

About the Academy

More than a set of awards. A structured route into lifesaving.

Yorkshire Lifeguard Academy is the RLSS Accredited Club within Yorkshire Lifeguards and the main route for aquatic lifesaving and lifeguard development. It is designed for confident swimmers who are ready to apply their ability to lifesaving skills, water safety, rescue confidence, first aid, lifesaving sport and future lifeguard qualifications.

The Academy is more than a collection of standalone courses or awards. It gives young people a structured route, a team identity, practical lifesaving skills, a sport to train for, and future progression into lifeguarding, water safety and coastal safety.

Usually suitable from age 8+, subject to water confidence, swimming ability and programme suitability. As a guide, participants should normally be confident swimming at around Swim England or STA Stage 5 equivalent or above. All Academy activity is delivered with appropriate safeguarding, supervision, risk assessment, qualified instruction and venue-specific procedures in place.

Yorkshire Lifeguard Academy is for confident swimmers, young people, teenagers and future lifeguards who want a practical next step into lifesaving, rescue skills, water safety, first aid, fitness, teamwork and recognised lifeguard qualifications. Programme availability may vary by venue, season, age group and demand — enquiries help us identify the most suitable route and location.

Academy Pathways

Our courses and pathways

Yorkshire Lifeguard Academy is the RLSS pathway within Yorkshire Lifeguards. It supports progression from junior lifesaving into water safety, lifesaving sport, pool lifeguarding, beach lifeguarding and open-water lifeguarding. SLSGB surf lifesaving, nippers, youth, adult club activity and surf sport sit separately with East Riding Surf Life Saving Club.

Qualification (NPLQ)

The industry-standard qualification for pool lifeguards in the UK. Required by most leisure operators, leisure trusts and aquatic venues as the minimum standard for employed pool lifeguards.

Lifesaving Sport

A sport at the heart of the Academy

Lifesaving sport is not an afterthought. It is a competitive, dynamic international sport with events in the pool and on the beach — and it gives Academy members something to train for, compete in and be proud of.

It is not a replacement for swimming clubs. It sits alongside existing lessons and club programmes as a different route for swimmers interested in lifesaving, rescue skills, water safety and coastal confidence.

Working with venues

Supporting the next step after swimming lessons and club swimming

Yorkshire Lifeguard Academy is not a replacement for swimming lessons or swimming clubs. It is the natural next step for confident swimmers who are ready for lifesaving skills, water safety awareness, rescue confidence and first aid knowledge — working alongside existing leisure centres, swim schools and clubs, not competing with them.

A progression route for your swimmers

Confident swimmers who have completed lessons need somewhere meaningful to go next. The Academy gives them that — while supporting the venue's existing programme structure and keeping progression connected to the local facility.

A future lifeguard pipeline

Young people progressing through the Academy are the future pool, beach and open water lifeguards of the region. Venues that support the pathway today are developing their own future workforce.
