The coastal version of the Rookie Lifeguard pathway. Introducing young people to beach safety, coastal awareness, lifesaving principles and respect for the sea — delivered in an age-appropriate way on the Yorkshire coast from Bridlington to Filey.
The Rookie Lifeguard Beach Programme takes the Rookie Lifeguard pathway out of the pool and onto the Yorkshire coast. It introduces young people to the skills, awareness and challenges of beach and coastal lifesaving, building age-appropriate foundations for future progression into surf lifesaving, lifesaving sport and, later, formal lifeguard qualifications such as NVBLQ.
The programme introduces lifeguard equipment such as rescue tubes and rescue boards in a controlled, supervised and age-appropriate way — helping children understand rescue principles, teamwork and coastal safety. The focus is on awareness, safe behaviour and confidence, not independent rescue activity. Sessions are delivered on the East Yorkshire coast — in and around Bridlington, Cayton Bay and Filey.
Rookie Lifeguard Beach sits within Yorkshire Lifeguard Academy's RLSS pathway. East Riding Surf Life Saving Club is the connected SLSGB-affiliated club route for children, youth, adults, surf lifesaving and lifesaving sport. NVBLQ is the later formal beach lifeguard qualification for suitable older candidates. The Beach Programme is designed to complement existing swimming lessons and club programmes — not replace them.
Beach and coastal lifesaving skills built progressively through the RLSS Rookie Lifeguard framework.
Understanding beach environments — rip currents, tides, surf conditions, beach flags and signals, and how to recognise and avoid the specific dangers of the North Sea coastline.
How to survive in the sea — self-rescue techniques, floating and conserving energy, responding to waves and currents, and staying calm in difficult coastal water conditions.
Safe rescue principles for the beach environment — raising the alarm, supporting bystanders, understanding what young people can safely do, and an introduction to lifeguard equipment such as rescue tubes and rescue boards in a controlled, supervised and age-appropriate way focused on awareness and safe principles.
Calling for help, raising the alarm and supporting bystanders while adults and emergency services respond — understanding what young people can safely do in a coastal emergency.
Understanding our environmental impact at the coast — how to respect and protect the coastal environment alongside keeping people safe within it.
Progressive RLSS Rookie Lifeguard beach awards as skills develop — giving children recognised achievement and clear milestones throughout the programme.
The Beach Programme is open to children from age 8. Unlike the Pool Programme, it does not have a strict upper age limit — older children who are newer to the coastal pathway are welcome to begin here.
Children should be confident pool swimmers before joining the Beach Programme. Previous open-water or sea experience is helpful, but not always essential — any sea-based activity will depend on conditions, supervision, risk assessment and individual readiness. Contact us to discuss your child's swimming background and readiness.
The Beach Programme works well alongside the Pool Programme. Many Academy members attend both, building a complete foundation in pool and coastal lifesaving skills.
Age
8 and above. Flexible depending on ability.
Setting
Yorkshire coast — Bridlington, Cayton Bay and Filey.
Swimming ability
Children should be confident pool swimmers and comfortable around open water. As a guide, they should be able to swim at least 25 metres confidently in a pool. Sea-based activity will depend on conditions, supervision, risk assessment and individual readiness.

Parent reassurance. Sessions are delivered in an age-appropriate way, with suitable supervision, safeguarding arrangements and clear safety boundaries. Sea conditions, weather and individual readiness will always shape what activity takes place. Not every session will involve entering the sea — safety always comes before programme content. Rookie Beach teaches awareness and safe principles; it does not qualify children to act as lifeguards or attempt rescues independently.
Rookie Lifeguard Beach sessions are planned and delivered with appropriate supervision, safeguarding arrangements, risk assessment and clear safety boundaries. Sea conditions, weather, beach environment and individual readiness will always shape what activity takes place. Not every session will involve entering the sea, and safety will always come before programme content.
All sessions delivered with qualified instruction, appropriate supervision and safeguarding arrangements in place.
Sea conditions, weather and beach environment are assessed before every session. Activity is always planned accordingly.
Sessions are supported by appropriate risk assessment, venue suitability and clear safety boundaries for the age group.
All equipment use and sea-based activity is introduced in a way that is appropriate to the age, ability and readiness of each participant.
Rookie Lifeguard Beach is part of Yorkshire Lifeguard Academy's RLSS pathway. It complements Rookie Lifeguard Pool and introduces young people to beach safety, coastal awareness, rescue principles, environmental respect and safe behaviour around the sea.
It can support progression into the National Lifesaving Academy, East Riding Surf Life Saving Club, lifesaving sport and, later, formal lifeguard qualifications such as NVBLQ for suitable older candidates.
Route reminder. Rookie Beach is RLSS Accredited Club activity. East Riding Surf Life Saving Club is the separate SLSGB-affiliated route for surf lifesaving, nippers, youth, adults and surf sport. NVBLQ is the later RLSS formal beach lifeguard qualification for suitable older candidates. For venue and coastal partners, Rookie Beach can support youth water safety, coastal awareness and future lifeguard development while remaining conditions-led, risk-assessed and appropriate to the setting.
What parents should expect
Rookie Beach is conditions-led. Some sessions may focus on beach safety, flags, coastal hazards, equipment awareness, fitness, first aid or dry-land activities rather than entering the sea. This is normal and expected — the programme is shaped by what is safe and appropriate on the day.
Safety always comes before programme content. Parents and guardians will be kept informed about what sessions involve. We will never put children in sea conditions that are inappropriate for their age, ability or readiness.
