Pool-Based Programme
First Step into the Academy
What it is

A practical lifesaving programme for confident young swimmers.

The Rookie Lifeguard Pool Programme is the first step into Yorkshire Lifeguard Academy's RLSS lifesaving pathway. It helps confident young swimmers learn water safety, safe rescue principles, personal survival, first aid awareness and how to keep themselves and others safer around water.

Children earn RLSS Rookie Lifeguard awards as they progress, building real skills at every stage. The sessions are active, social and purposeful — giving young swimmers a team to belong to and meaningful milestones to work towards.

The programme can run alongside existing swimming lessons rather than replacing them — a natural next step for confident swimmers who are ready for something more purposeful, without disrupting their current club or lesson arrangements.

Rookie Lifeguard Pool is the first step into the wider Academy — leading to Rookie Lifeguard Beach, the National Lifesaving Academy and formal lifeguard qualifications as participants grow and progress.

What children learn

Skills build progressively through the RLSS Rookie Lifeguard framework — from basic water safety awareness to practical rescue techniques.

Water Safety

Understanding water environments, recognising hazards, safe behaviour in and around water, and how to respond when something goes wrong.

Reaching & Throwing Rescues

How to help someone in difficulty from the poolside — using reaching poles, throwing aids and verbal instructions without entering the water.

Personal Survival

Survival skills in the water — treading water, floating, HELP and Huddle positions, and how to conserve energy when in difficulty.

First Aid Awareness

An introduction to emergency response — calling for help, casualty assessment and basic life support awareness appropriate for the age group.

Lifesaving Equipment

Introduction to rescue tubes, buoyancy aids and pool rescue equipment — what they are for and how to use them safely.

Progressive RLSS Awards

Children earn RLSS Rookie Lifeguard awards as their skills develop — giving them recognised achievement and clear milestones to work towards.

Who can join

Age

Approximately 8–12. Some flexibility depending on ability and maturity.

Water confidence and swimming ability

Children should normally be able to swim at least 25 metres confidently and independently. As a rough guide, this is often around Stage 7 in many swim school schemes, but no specific scheme or badge is required — readiness matters more than any particular stage.

Experience

No previous lifesaving experience required. We start from the basics and build progressively.

Suitability check

Before confirming a place, we may ask about your child's age, water confidence, swimming ability and programme suitability so we can make sure the session is safe, appropriate and useful for them.

Parent reassurance. The programme is designed for confident swimmers, not beginners. Sessions are delivered in an age-appropriate way, with suitable supervision, safeguarding arrangements, clear safety boundaries and activities matched to the group. All sessions include appropriate risk assessment and venue-specific procedures in place.

Who it's for

The right next step for confident young swimmers.

The Rookie Lifeguard Pool Programme is designed for children who can already swim and are ready to use that ability in a lifesaving and water safety direction. It sits alongside existing swimming lessons and swimming clubs — not in place of them.

It is not a beginner programme. Children should be confident, independent swimmers before they join — able to swim at least 25 metres comfortably without stopping.

If your child loves being in the water but is looking for something beyond standard lessons — a team, a sport and real skills — the Rookie Pool Programme is the right place to start.

Not quite ready yet? That is completely fine. We would encourage your child to keep building confidence with their current swim teacher, leisure centre or club, and come back to us when they are ready for the next step.

Parents can expect structured, active sessions focused on water safety, lifesaving skills, confidence, teamwork and recognised RLSS Rookie Lifeguard awards. This is not a swimming lesson, but swimming ability is used and developed throughout the programme. For leisure venues, Rookie Pool can help provide a meaningful next step for confident swimmers, supporting retention, water safety culture and future lifeguard development.

Readiness guide

Is my child ready for Rookie Lifeguard Pool?

Rookie Pool may be a good fit if your child:

It may be better to wait if your child is still nervous in the water, needs regular support to complete lengths, or is still developing basic water confidence. That is not a problem — every child reaches this stage in their own time. We are here when they are ready.
