About Combined First Aid Courses

Two qualifications. One streamlined course.

Combined first aid courses are designed for settings where first aiders need to be confident supporting both adults and children — schools, nurseries, childcare settings, sports clubs, leisure centres, community organisations and activity providers who may be responsible for both adults and children in the same setting.

Overlapping adult and paediatric first aid content is taught once where appropriate, helping your team train efficiently while still working towards two separate Ofqual-regulated certificates. This does not reduce the depth of learning — it removes unnecessary repetition.

Both certificates are awarded on successful completion and assessment. Both are Ofqual-regulated RLSS UK Level 3 qualifications, valid 3 years from assessment. Minimum age: 16 years old at time of assessment. Delivered by suitably qualified Bluewatch Training instructors at your setting or an agreed venue across Yorkshire and the East Riding, subject to suitable space, learner numbers and course requirements.

Which combined course do I need?

Choosing between EPFA & EFAW or PFA & FAW.

Combined EPFA & EFAW — 1 Day

Often suitable where the setting needs emergency adult workplace first aid and emergency paediatric first aid. Subject to the needs assessment and statutory requirements for each element.

Combined PFA & FAW — 3 Days

Often suitable where the setting needs full workplace first aid and full paediatric first aid — for example, settings with higher workplace risk and EYFS or childcare requirements for full PFA.

Check your setting's requirements

Combined courses support — they don’t replace — your own compliance checks.

Workplace first aid requirements depend on the employer’s first-aid needs assessment. Paediatric first aid requirements depend on the setting, age groups, staff roles, ratios, outings, statutory duties, insurance and internal policies.

Bluewatch Training can help you compare course options, but each organisation remains responsible for ensuring its first aid provision is suitable for its own setting and regulatory requirements.

Who it's for

Settings that benefit from combined first aid training

Combined courses are especially useful where staff may be responsible for both adults and children in the same setting, or where the organisation needs workplace and paediatric first aid provision.

Schools and academies

Nurseries and childminders

Childcare settings

Sports clubs and leisure centres

Community organisations

Holiday clubs, activity providers and youth organisations

Each organisation should confirm that the combined course selected is appropriate for their setting, staff roles and statutory requirements. Bluewatch Training can discuss this before booking.

Course comparison
Combined course Best suited to Certificates awarded
Combined EPFA & EFAW
1 day / usually 7 hours
Settings needing emergency adult workplace first aid and emergency paediatric first aid, where the needs assessment and statutory requirements allow both at the emergency level Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) + Emergency Paediatric First Aid (EPFA)
Combined PFA & FAW
3 days
Settings needing full workplace first aid and full paediatric first aid — for example, higher-risk workplaces, leisure settings, schools, childcare providers or organisations where EYFS / Ofsted arrangements require full PFA First Aid at Work (FAW) + Paediatric First Aid (PFA)

This is a guide only. The right option depends on your workplace first-aid needs assessment, child age groups, staff roles, EYFS / Ofsted requirements, outings, risk level and internal policies.

Combined first aid training does not replace

Safeguarding policies, medication policies, allergy management plans, accident reporting systems, emergency procedures, risk assessments, supervision arrangements or setting-specific responsibilities.

Organisations remain responsible for ensuring the right number and type of first aiders are available across opening hours, rooms, activities, outings, shifts and public-facing operations. Learners should contact Bluewatch Training in advance if they have accessibility needs, medical considerations or concerns about taking part in practical elements.

Best suited to

Combined courses may be a good fit for

  • Schools and academies
  • Nurseries and childminders
  • Childcare settings and wraparound providers
  • Holiday clubs and activity providers
  • Leisure centres and sports clubs
  • Community organisations and youth groups
  • Venues where staff support both adults and children
  • Organisations wanting to reduce duplicated training time

Combined courses may not be suitable where the selected combined course does not match the employer’s first-aid needs assessment, EYFS / Ofsted requirements, staff roles, ratios, outings, insurance or internal policies. For schools, nurseries, leisure venues and activity providers, combined courses can reduce staff training disruption while still supporting separate workplace and paediatric first aid certificate requirements, where the selected course is appropriate for the setting. Combined first aid enquiries are welcome from schools, nurseries, sports clubs, leisure venues, childcare providers and activity organisations across East Yorkshire and the Yorkshire coast, including Bridlington, Filey, Scarborough and Whitby.

When enquiring, please include
